4 awesome features of the iPhone 13

The iPhone 13 was released at the end of last month, to rave reviews. Although Apple is still expecting us to use Face ID rather than Touch ID, there are a fair few features that are worth getting excited about.

1. Smile! This smartphone camera is almost as good as it gets

It’s been said that the best camera is the one that you have with you at all times, and as so it's not surprising that we’re taking more photos on our phones than ever before. Apple has really put the work in with the iPhone 13 Pro, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max, both of which have received massive camera updates, but even the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 mini takes this to the next level.

Cameras are bigger and let in 47% more light than the iPhone 12, and it makes a huge difference in good light and in low light, with photo quality much improved. There’s a photographic styles’ feature for still shots; you can even save a preset for the default Camera app so you don’t need to add a filter in post.

2. Cinematic mode: make professional looking films from your phone

Ok, so we’re still going on about the camera, but this feature really is worth shouting about. Cinematic mode allows you to become the documentary filmmaker that you’ve always wished you could be. You can record videos with a shallow depth of field, really allowing you to focus on the subject in front of you.

As well as those artfully blurred backgrounds, Cinematic mode also allows you to use focus transitions; you set automatic focus tracking on a subject, or lock the focus by touching and holding the screen. Then watch as they look towards the camera, and the foreground and background blurs. Move over, Ken Loach.

3. Worried about running out of battery? Don’t be

The iPhone 13 has a huge battery life; lasting about 46 hours with 5 hours of screen time. This is great news for the 2022 festival season, particularly if you’re thinking of camping in the UK and don’t fancy crowding around a wet charging point.

The iPhone 13’s long battery life is also good news for replacing the battery, as the less you charge it, the less degraded it's going to become. But even if you do need to replace the battery, it’s only going to set you back £69.

4. So much storage...finally

One complaint of the earlier iPhone models is that they tend to have a lot less storage than other comparable smartphone. Unless you were opting for the Pro, you were likely to get 64GB as standard if you bought an iPhone 12. This seriously effects space for photos, media and applications.

The new iPhone 13 starts with 128GB, which is a really welcome improvement. This is particularly great considering that the iPhone 12 had 64GB and was £20 more expensive when it was released. Now you can get the entry-level iPhone with the storage that you need, rather than having to pay more for the storage.
