If you’re looking to help your community, but don’t have money to spare at the moment, you can still provide assistance. We’ve found a selection of apps that are great for helping you to help others, without costing you a penny.
Be My Eyes (available from the Play Store and the Apple Store)
Be My Eyes is designed to help those who are blind or visually impaired, by connecting them with sighted volunteers for assistance visually. This is achieved through the app by the blind or low sighted person requesting assistance, and a video call is started between themselves and a volunteer. Sighted volunteers can then help the blind or low-sighted person distinguish anything from expiration dates to instructions.
You can get this app on Android and iPhone. If you speak multiple languages, Be My Eyes is also looking for volunteers to help them translate the application into different languages.
Bright Sky (available from the Play Store and the Apple Store)
Bright Sky is an application designed to help victims of domestic abuse, as well as assist those looking to help friends and family who they suspect could be victims of domestic abuse. The application contains a wealth of information to help you identify the signs of domestic abuse, as well as how to respond to a domestic abuse victim, and assist someone in finding a safe route to support.
This app is available on Android and iPhone, and is available in 5 languages: English, Urdu, Punjabi, Polish and Welsh.
Game Changer (Sign up to download the application)
Game Changer is a research project within an application, with the aim of understanding dementia. All users need to do is play a five minute ‘brain game’ every day, for a month. It is being led by the University of Oxford, and it is designed to analyse how brains work and memory changes over time. The goal for this research is to be able to spot the early changes in the brains of people with dementia in the future, in order to develop new treatments.
To take part and get the app, you need to register your interest by clicking the green button which reads ‘Sign up to Game Changer’.
Charity Miles (available from the Play Store and the Apple Store)
Charity Miles is an app which turns the miles that you walk, run or cycle into money for your chosen charity. There are over 50 charities to choose from that you can donate your miles to, and so far users have generated over $2.5m for good causes. The app generates donations through business partners, who donate part of their advertising budget to the application. This is then used to fund the donations made when users generate miles.
Businesses can also sign up for the Employee Empowerment Program, where you can create a private company team, and even sponsor your employees to help contribute towards their chosen charity.
To get started, scan the QR code that is listed on their website. From there, you can download the app, create an account and start walking, running or cycling for your chosen charity.
