Are you running out of things to do remotely? Is the weekly family quiz something you’re dreading rather than looking forward to? If you’re looking for new ways to keep yourself and your friends entertained during lockdown, we’ve got some great games that you can play remotely in lockdown.
For those with a dark sense of humour: Cards Against Humanity
Free on iOS and Android
Cards Against Humanity is a great way for you to find out who your friends are, or were before they were permanently scarred by this game. This is an inappropriate, not-safe-for-work version of blankety blank; one person reads out a black card with a blank space in it, and everyone has to fill it in with one of their white cards. There is also a family friendly version if you’d prefer to stick to slightly less risky humour. Just start a game, send a link to your friends and get started.
For those who find video calls boring: HouseParty
Free on iOS and Android
HouseParty is one of the champions of lockdown, and it’s easy to see why. Video call hosting is integrated with games such as Heads Up! (everyone describes a word to the player, who has to guess), Chips and Guac (word association with a twist) and Quick Draw (pictionary). HouseParty does tend to get busy at peak times and we’ve had issues with it in the past (Saturday nights in particular!) but it’s a great way of having socially distanced fun.
For those who like variety: Jackbox
Starting at $12.49
Jackbox has a great selection of co-op games, and have even written an article on how to set up and play with your friends remotely. Go for classics like Quiplash (essentially a choose your own cards version of Cards Against Humanity) or try out their latest games in Party Pack 6 including Trivia Murder Party 2, Push the Button and Role Models. You can play with up to 10 people and only one of you needs to purchase the game.
For those with a competitive streak: Mario Kart Tour
Free on iOS and Android
Just because we’re in lockdown, it doesn’t mean we can’t get a little competitive. Mario Kart Tour is everything you love about the classic Nintendo title, condensed down onto your phone for free. Collect different karts, gliders and drivers and race up to 7 people at once, completely remotely. For Nintendo fans there are some courses that you’ll remember, and a few new ones based on real world locations to keep things fresh.
For those who like to be creative: Psych!
Free on iOS and Android
Psych! is from the creators of Heads Up! so you know it’s going to be perfectly executed hilarity. Your friends make up fake answers to real trivia questions, and you have to figure out the real answer hiding in the mix. It’s a creative take on the quiz format that we’ve all got to know and somewhat love during lockdown. There’s also a new version, And The Truth Comes Out, which is the same format but with personal questions about your friends.
For those who want to play in a completely different world: Sky: Children of Light
Free on iOS and Android
Sky: Children of Light won iPhone Game of the Year in 2019, and it’s not run out of steam yet. Explore an animated world with your friends and family, solve mysteries, spread light through the kingdom and go on adventures. The game is beautiful to look at, and although it’s not a game for Saturday night video calls it’s definitely worth checking out. If you’re looking to lose yourself in a completely different world, Sky: Children of Light is the game you’ve been looking for.
For those with kids on the call: Skattegories
Free
If you’re looking for a game to play with your kids, Skattegories could be the answer. The game starts with a phrase such as ‘animals you’d find in a jungle’, and you have to race to answer with as many responses as you can think of. You can invite friends with a game link if you’d like to play remotely, which is great to do whilst you’re running a video call. We say this one is good for kids, but adults might find it just as addictive!
