This month we've welcomed Tim Hughes to Transcendit, who has joined our team as an IT Support Engineer. We caught up with Tim to find out more about him, and how he got into IT.
'When I was in 6th form, I wanted to be a doctor,' says Tim. 'But the school got put into special measures, so I decided to leave and go to college instead. I considered being a car mechanic, tried that for a couple of weeks but that wasn't a good fit either. Finally, I tried IT. I did a BTEC Level 3, and then went to University of Salford, and did a BSc in Computer Networking.'
Working in IT made sense for Tim, as he enjoys figuring out how things work, 'I've always been the sort of person who takes everything apart, to see how everything works,' says Tim. 'I've been told that when I was little, I used to get the iron out the cupboard under the stairs, find a screwdriver from somewhere and start trying to take that apart.
'If something can be taken apart, I'll find a way to take it apart. I've had my own car in bits. It's not always had good results, I have made smoke come out of the back of things on occasion. But there's a joy in figuring out yourself how to fix something that's broken. As soon as I get a new laptop I'm taking it apart, just to see what's inside.'
Whilst he was finishing his BSc, Tim started working, 'I started my first job in IT in Manchester before I graduated, and was learning to work on a service desk. I always say that I like working in IT because it connects people together. IT is the thing that allows you access to everything; information, knowledge, people. I couldn't imagine life without it.'
In his free time, Tim socialises with his friends from university, 'I tend to go to Manchester and Cumbria to see my friends at the weekends - just going for a walk, the cinema, or going for a meal. For me, it's more about being with the people than what we're actually doing. During lockdown we've transitioned to video chats and games nights, which has been good.'
Tim has already started working towards his Microsoft certification, which he hopes to finish in a few weeks. He is already enjoying working with the rest of our IT support team. 'I like talking to clients, and figuring out how to fix a problem that they're having. That's a really good side of support engineering.'
