Say your goodbyes to Windows 7, and hello to nagware

Remember back in the day, when Microsoft went on and on about how much they wanted us to move to Windows 10? Those relentless little pop-ups had most of us upgrading, but for those who stuck with Windows 7, you may soon have to say your goodbyes.

Support for Windows 7 is ending in January 2020, so for those of you still using this operating system, that means you’ll no longer be sent updates from Microsoft. Great, right? Those updates are really annoying and always crop up when you’re in a rush. Unfortunately, those updates are absolutely vital for keeping your machine safe.

Windows updates contain everything from plugs and fixes for programs, to antivirus software to keep those internet nasties at bay. This is great for users, because it means that whatever new malware develops, Windows is working to keep your tech protected. Similarly, if something goes wrong with Outlook or Word, the fixes can be pushed out to users with Windows updates.

Therefore, once support ends for Windows 7, those still using this operating system are at risk from any and every new ransomware or virus that an unscrupulous individual with very few morals can come up with. Scammers will take advantage of the fact that security for Windows 7 is going to stop being updated after January 2020, because it means that their nasties can fly under the radar and into your devices.

If you’re still using Windows 7, it’s definitely worth upgrading before the cut off. Obviously Microsoft agrees, and is very keen for you to move to Windows 10. As such, you’ll start receiving a few of those nagging reminders that it’s time to upgrade. However, unlike the first time we got all of these notifications pestering us to update our PCs, you’re only going to receive this notification a handful of times.

We’re glad that Windows has learned its lesson with nagware and isn’t going to drown its users in a barrage of pop ups, but by introducing the ‘don’t remind me again’ option on these reminders, it’s easy for the deadline to be forgotten. If you are still using Windows 7, we’d encourage you to upgrade. If you’re on the fence, give our IT support team a call. They’re always happy to talk you through the options.
