For National Apprenticeship Week we've been chatting to Dave Scott, Director at Transcendit, and Scott Dewing, who joined Transcendit as an apprentice in June 2014. Scott is now studying for higher level qualifications, whilst continuing to work as a Support Engineer.
'Apprenticeships are really great for SMEs,' says Dave. 'You help the apprentice develop, and that also helps the business to develop. It creates a supportive atmosphere within your business, and you build relationships with colleges in the community. Hiring Scott has been a really positive experience for us.'
Scott says that he didn't want to go to university to study, 'University is a good choice for some people, but I wanted to start working. Doing an apprenticeship at Transcendit was so much better for me than learning in a school environment; I picked things up much faster, and I was able to earn money whilst I was learning. It's a great route for students to take.'
Scott believes that apprenticeships can help students get into work, 'I think you can get comfortable in education, and to go into a job after that can be quite scary. But apprenticeships bridge that gap between education and the workplace. You get on the ground experience. You're putting everything you're learning into practice every day.'
Dave is very proud of Scott's accomplishments, 'Over the past few years, Scott has proved himself to be a capable, knowledgeable and highly-skilled Support Engineer. He's an extremely dedicated member of our team and is well-liked by our customers. We hope other companies will invest in apprenticeships as we have, as it really has benefited our business.'
Scott hopes other students will consider apprenticeships, 'If you're sick of sitting in a classroom you should really give it a go. Working at Transcendit has improved my skills and my confidence. It's one of the best ways to gain your qualifications.'
