Around 9pm on Friday 24th January, a speeding car hit our C9 office. Over the days that followed, Transcendit had to work around insurance companies, landlords and deal with an office that now had a car shaped hole in it.
'Without a good disaster recovery plan in place, it would have been really difficult,' says Transcendit Director Adam Kuznesof. 'Although half of our office escaped unscathed, the other half wasn't suitable for working in. We had no heating and no bathrooms; it just wasn't possible for our team to carry on working in the office.'
'As part of our disaster recovery plan, everyone in the team has their own laptop. That meant that all of our web development, admin teams and directors who usually work in the damaged building could work from home easily. They could connect to our systems using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) which gave them access to everything they'd usually have in the office.'
'That meant whilst we were sorting out a temporary office space, our business kept going. Deadlines were still able to be met, our team was still able to communicate and collaborate efficiently using a combination of Microsoft Teams, Basecamp and VOIP telephony. It was essential that we didn't let our customers down.'
'It's not really something businesses should be looking at as a luxury, or an unnecessary expense - it is a necessity, particularly for SMEs. It's no good trying to put a plan in place after something has gone wrong, because by then it's already too late. It's really important that directors and executives recognise the harm that an accident, like the one Transcendit experienced, could do to their business.'
If you don't have a disaster recovery plan Transcendit can help your business to create one, as well as discuss your backup options.
